How to Find the Best Real Estate Agent for You

The real estate business is a competitive one to say the least. According to the National Association of Realtors®, there are over 2,000,000 active real estate licenses in the United States, which means there are many agents all over the country hoping to represent you. Every agent brings something different to the table, so it’s important to find one that is a perfect fit for you and your family. If you feel a personal connection with your agent, then you’ve probably found a good match. In any situation, a good rule of thumb when selecting an agent is to remember this: A good real estate agent can make the complicated process of buying or selling a home much easier. But, a great real estate agent will make the process feel effortless. 

1)Connections - Just as you would find a school for your children or hire a handyman, it’s good to ask friends and family if they have any recommendations of real estate professionals they’ve worked with in the past. Working with an agent who has represented someone with similar needs as you, or has bought or sold in the same neighborhood, should have an upper hand which will provide some major insight for your own needs.

2)Credentials - Before you hire anyone, you should always ensure they have legal certifications and an active real estate license. If you want to take it a step further, you are legally allowed to look into the Real Estate Board legislation, to see if your potential agent has ever been disciplined by they board for previous transactions. This information is public to protect future buyers from entering into an agreement with a shady real estate professional. 

3) Communication - There are many Realtors® who are considered part-time agents and share their real estate career with another profession to supplement earnings. Working with an agent who makes real estate their full-time career, is more likely to work hard for you, close a transaction faster, be in constant communication with you, and provide you with consistent updates. If timing is important to you, be sure to work with someone who is willing to go that extra mile for your property sale or search.

And as always, go with your gut. Usually your best instinct will tell you if a Realtor® is right for you. Don’t ever hesitate to treat the process like an interview. Your agent works for you and should always be willing to answer any questions you may have about the process. They are there to make the entire home buying and selling process a lot smoother and stress-free.
